The Carnahan area is just south of Interstate 90 and drops off the south hill of Spokane to the east.
The land becomes flatter and more plain like here with pine trees and fir groves replacing the lush deciduous trees of south hill proper. Newer housing is interspersed with older ranchers and two stories. Several newer housing developments are sprouting here and to the south on Glenrose Prairie.
Family friendly neighborhoods, apartment complexes and condominiums all exist in this area. There is close access to schools, shopping and entertainment. With Interstate 90 just on the northern border, downtown Spokane and points both east and west are easily accessible.
Dishman Hills Natural Area is just to the east and provides 518 acres of trails through ponderosa pine and fir groves interspersed with small ponds surrounded by cottonwood and quaking aspen. This is a popular hiking and bird watching site.

School Districts and Schools
The Carnahan area is served by Spokane Public Schools - District 81. In the South Central Region there are two high schools, two middle schools, and 12 elementary schools. A voter-approved renovation plan backs every school. Serving more than 30,000 students in its total coverage area, Spokane Public Schools has over 8,000 active parent/community volunteers as well as over 500 community and business supporters. The technology services department maintains over 13,000 computers and 4,000 printers and scanners.
The park highlight of this area is the Dishman Hills Natural Area just to the east. The 518-acre site features hiking trails that crisscross in and out of ponderosa pine and fir groves. Small ponds surrounded by cottonwood and quaking aspen thrill bird watching enthusiasts who frequent the park. To the west is well-loved Manito Park, famed for its summer gardens and winter sledding hills. Manito Golf Club is minutes south and Indian Canyon Public Golf Course is minutes northwest. Easy access to interstate 90 puts many recreation areas, golf courses and sport facilities a short car ride away.
Shopping and Services
Just to the southwest is the busy shopping district bordering 29th Ave where everything from groceries and lattés to fast food and fine dining can be found. At the base of the south hill near the freeway on Thor is a large Fred Meyer store. The whole area has easy access to downtown Spokane via Interstate 90.
Spokane’s major medical district is located just west and anchored by Deaconess Medical Center, the Shriners Hospital for Children, Sacred Heart Medical Center and St Luke’s Rehabilitation Institute.
